Treading Water

He said, “We’ve created lives in which we can be happy without each other.” Because we are forced to be without each other. And I’ve filled his space with things and people. But you can’t put a door in place of a damn and contain the river. And you can’t substitute salt for sugar and enjoy the cake. And I can’t replace him. And I haven’t created a world in which I can be happy without him, I’ve created a world in which I can keep my head above water.
